Recommended recordings

One of the most acclaimed recordings of Rigoletto stars Maria Callas, Tito Gobbi, and Giuseppe di Stefano, with the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro alla Scala di Milano conducted by Tullio Serafin.  EMI made this studio recording in Milan September 3-16, 1955.  John Ardoin called this recording "a never-ending source of dramatic enlightenment."  He wrote:  "Of immeasurable help to Callas' penetrating portrayal are Serafin's collaboration, full of wisdom and song, and the exactingly intelligent singing of Gobbi in the title role.  Like Callas, Gobbi draws strength from the text, and he does so with such model diction that we all but taste Piave's words."  Maria Callas Remastered - Verdi: Rigoletto (1955), CD, amazon.com
