Verdi: Otello

In Plácido Domingo’s first studio recording of Otello, Renata Scotto sang Desdemona and Sherrill Milnes sang Iago. James Levine conducted. Available from

One of my favorite recordings of Otello is now available on Opera d’Oro from, at a low price but without a libretto or plot synopsis. The stars are Mario Del Monaco, Gabriella Tucci, and Tito Gobbi in a "live" performance in Japan in 1959 conducted by Alberto Erede. The three principals are impressive. A drawback to this recording is that the Japanese chorus, though more than adequate, is not quite so good as a European chorus would have been.
