15 and 17 April 2011 at 20:00 Debussy: Pelléas et Mélisande, concert performance
My translation (not necessarily 100% correct): Simon Keenlyside is a tremendous musician--Paris is not close to forgetting his Orfeo or, more recently, his Wozzeck--but he disappoints as Pelléas. Left arm in sling, the principal non-Francophone of this cast, if he sometimes swallows the words, is not at fault on the pronunciation—he has already sung the role, notably at Bastille in 2004--and does not lack valor, but the registers are all safe welded, the timbre fluctuates incessantly, the high notes pass difficultly and the declamation is cautious. --- Renaud Machart, writing for Le Monde, says that he heard what may be, in terms of conducting, the most beautiful Pelléas et Mélisande in memory. He goes on to say that "le Pelléas de Simon Keenlyside est sonore, testostéroné, et peut se jouer du puissant flot orchestral derrière lui." --- Review in French, Delphine Dalens-Marekovic, Forum Opera --- Review in Spanish, Jorge Binaghi, mundoclasico.com --- Some footage of rehearsal: ---
