About Vivica Genaux |
In a review of a recording of Handel's Arminio for Opera News of December 2001, M. Lignana Rosenberg wrote of Vivica Genaux: "[T]his set makes abundantly clear why mezzo Vicica Genaux is widely hailed as one of opera's up-and-coming 'it' girls. Something special happens when she starts to sing--somethig that sets off a thrill, something that her warm, vibrant tone, razor-sharp diction, boldness of attack and sensational technique only begin to explain. Genaux has ... pizzazz? Élan? Decide for yourself, but try not to miss the defiance with which she spits out the captive prince's recitative in Act III, or the sheer spunk she brings to the wickedly difficult 'Fatto scorta al sentier di gloria.'" |

"American mezzo Vivica Genaux is one of the hottest young singers in opera, and her album of famous 'Bel Canto Arias' showcases what critics and audiences love -- peppery, precise coloratura passages, a voice that is warm and creamy in all registers, and that extra-special sparkle that elevates fine singers to the company of superstars," wrote Chris Schull for the Wichita Eagle. "HANDEL: 'RINALDO' Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, conducted by René Jacobs (Harmonia Mundi France; three CD's) Mr. Jacobs's output is so prolific you could almost believe he's improvising the music as he goes; indeed, opening up Handel to improvisation is one reason his recordings bring the composer alive. This performance is especially fine, with a strong cast (including Vivica Genaux in the title role) and vital playing.
