Carlos Kleiber conducts Ileana Cotrubas, Plácido Domingo, Sherrill Milnes, and the Bayerisches Staatsorchester in a recording for Deutsche Grammophon available from amazon.com
A must for fans of Maria Callas is a recording of a live performance from La Scala, Milan, of May 28, 1955, the Visconti production conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini. John Ardoin wrote of this performance that Callas’s “taste and imagination . . . stimulated by challenging artistic surroundings (exemplified here by Giulini and Visconti) . . . flower with rare color and life.” Giuseppe Di Stefano sings Alfredo Germont, and Ettore Bastianini sings his father Giorgio Germont. The quality of the sound is not especially good, and I would not recommend this recording as anyone’s first or only recording of La Traviata. Available from amazon.com
