Rigolettoby Giuseppe Verdi
Recommended recordings
One of the most acclaimed recordings of Rigoletto stars Maria Callas, Tito Gobbi, and Giuseppe di Stefano, with the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro alla Scala di Milano conducted by Tullio Serafin. EMI made this studio recording in Milan September 3-16, 1955. John Ardoin called this recording “a never-ending source of dramatic enlightenment.” He wrote: “Of immeasurable help to Callas’ penetrating portrayal are Serafin’s collaboration, full of wisdom and song, and the exactingly intelligent singing of Gobbi in the title role. Like Callas, Gobbi draws strength from the text, and he does so with such model diction that we all but taste Piave’s words.” Available from amazon.com
My favorite recording of Rigoletto is a studio recording made in Rome in the 1960’s by RCA Victor starring Anna Moffo, Robert Merrill, and Alfredo Kraus conducted by Georg Solti. Amazon.com
Joan Sutherland made two studio recordings of Rigoletto. The later recording included Luciano Pavarotti as the Duke and Sherrill Milnes as Rigoletto. Richard Bonynge conducted. Available from amazon.co.uk. And from amazon.com.
Historical recording
From amazon.co.uk one can orders a Naxos Historical recording of a “live” performance from the 1940’s starring Jussi Björling, Leonard Warren and Bidù Sayão.
