December 2009

"Not until my early twenties did I hear my first opera: a record of La Bohème. The story, the music and Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni's glorious singing transcended the language barrier. I was hooked."--Simon Keenlyside, timesonline.co.uk

"Vítores y abucheos en estreno de nuevo montaje de 'Macbeth' de Verdi en Viena," adn.es
"El barítono británico Simon Keenlyside, que interpretó a Macbeth, recibió la más larga y calurosa ovación de la noche por una interpretación notable, por encima del resto del elenco."

Verdi's Don Carlo in Italian, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden 15, 18, 21, 23, 27 September and 1 October 2009

"In two elements, the performance could scarcely be improved. One is the superbly sung Posa of Simon Keenlyside, who leaves no corner of his character unrevealed. The other is Semyon Bychkov's conducting, which brings out the unutterable dignity and pathos of the extraordinary score."--George Hall, The Stage

"There's not a lot going on between this Carlo and Simon Keenlyside's low-key Posa, though, with the latter only coming to life, ironically, during his death scene."--Simon Thomas, whatsonstage.com

The DVD Twin Spirits is scheduled for release on DVD at amazon.co.uk on 28 September 2009, and on DVD at amazon.com and on Blu-Ray at amazon.com on 29 September 2009.

"Twin Spirits is a unique and intimate, live theatrical performance by a chamber ensemble of actors, singers and musicians, portraying the deep and ultimately tragic love between the composer Robert Schumann and his pianist wife Clara Wieck. In this intensely moving performance of words, song and music, the Schumanns' long separation, so formative an influence on their lives, is reflected in the division of the ensemble into male and female groups. Robert's letters to Clara are read by Sting and his songs sung by Simon Keenlyside, with accompaniments and instrumental music played by Iain Burnside and Sergej Krylov. Clara's letters to Robert are read by Trudie Styler and her songs sung by Rebecca Evans, with accompaniments and instrumental music played by Natalie Clein and Natasha Paremski. The narrator, Derek Jacobi, links together the letters and lyrics to complete the essential outline of the story. Conceived and directed by John Caird, Twin Spirits was first performed in June 2005 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London and has since been experienced only at private performances for charity by small audiences of all ages and interests, leaving them deeply touched and inspired."--product description of the Blu-Ray at amazon.com

"Prince Charles attended but did not join in the National Anthem, and certainly not the line 'Long to reign over us'. Then it was on to the proper stuff. Vaughan Williams's The Wasps Overture sounded oddly like music from a Western, while his Five Mystical Songs received an eloquent reading from Keenlyside, managing to sound conversational while delivering the full weight of expression."--from review, by Nick Kimberley, Evening Standard, of July 22, 2009, Proms concert

"Gramophone has learned of a deal between the BBC and EMI Classics to record and release Thomas Adès's [sic] opera The Tempest. . . .

The BBC are to record the ROH revival for broadcast and EMI will issue it, probably later this year. When the BBC televised the original run, tenor Ian Bostridge (who plays Caliban) was indisposed and an understudy sang his role. It will be Bostridge, though, alongside fellow original cast members Simon Keenlyside (Prospero) and Cynthia Sieden (Ariel) and newcomer Kate Royal (Miranda), who will feature on the EMI set." . . .
