It has been reported that the management of New York City Opera have rejected an offer made by the labor union representing musicians and singers that would have required the union members to work for free during performances while being paid for rehearsals and while maintaining their employee benefits. Management states that the arrangement would probably violate the law, and I think they’re right. Employees cannot legally be required to work for less than the miniumum wage, I shouldn’t think.
