Songs to be sung by Sarah Connolly at Alice Tully Hall

Filed under: Sarah Connolly — Administrator @ 10:59 pm

Here are some of the songs that Sarah Connolly is scheduled to sing at Alice Tully Hall on April 14 (but sung here by people other than Sarah Connolly):

Schumann: Maria Stuart Lieder, Op. 135

1. Abschied von Frankreich
2. Nach der Geburt ihres Sohnes
3. An die Koenigin Elisabeth
4. Abschied von der Welt
5. Gebet

Only the first of the three songs on the following video are scheduled for the April 14 recital:

Here is the great Welsh tenor Richard Lewis singing three songs by Peter Warlock from a recital in 1970 with Martin Isepp, piano.

- “Sleep”
- “Away to Triver”
- “The Fox”

I could not find a video of the following song. Here is a brief excerpt:

Again a song of which I could not find a video. Here is a brief excerpt:

Again I couldn’t find a video. Here is a brief excerpt:

Again I couldn’t find a video. Here is a brief excerpt:

Again no video, but here is a brief excerpt from “There was an old woman.” The Lincoln Center program says “There was an old lady.” I don’t know why the difference.

UPDATE: At first I was unable to find either a video or an MP3 excerpt for Dominic Muldowney’s “In Paris with You,” but commenter Melodiaavis kindly pointed out the following video is indeed at youtube:

It is one of the songs on the CD Tell Me the Truth about Love, an album of cabaret songs sung by Mary Carewe.

UPDATE: The actual program turned out to be a little different from the above. See entry of April 15.

In hte United States one can now buy MP3 songs at Amazon.com and store them online to play any time on a personal computer with Amazon Cloud Player.

And so I bought one song, “A Love Like This” sung by Renée Fleming. It is pleasant, she sings it with her somewhat dusky jazzy voice, but nothing terribly remarkable.

Matthew Polenzani & Julius Drake in Boston

Filed under: Julius Drake,Matthew Polenzani — Administrator @ 11:40 pm

Matthew Polenzani, tenor, and Julius Drake, piano, performed Franz Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin, D. 795, tonight at Jordan Hall in Boston. Both gave a superlative performance, even better than I had expected. Polenzani has a pleasant voice and demonstrated considerable dramatic intelligence, making all the songs interesting and moving. His gestures and facial expressions, never excessive, were always appropriate. There was excellent rapport between the two performers. It was a delight to hear both of them. The audience was very appreciative. There was one encore, Schubert’s “Im Abendrot.” In introducing it, Polenzani said that both he and Julius Drake had discussed possible encores, but that they had decided to take another person’s suggestion of “Im Abendrot.”

Matthew Polenzani and Julius Drake were at WGBH Radio on Wednesday, where they were photographed and where they performed “Der Neugierige” from Die sch&ounl;ne Müllerin for broadcast on the radio. A recording of the broadcast is at http://www.wgbh.org/programs/-276/episodes/-26320.

Sophisticated Ladies

Filed under: Renee Fleming — Administrator @ 8:22 pm

“Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall, Melody Gardot, Norah Jones, Renée Fleming and Ruth Cameron: the lineup of singers performing popular standards and vintage obscurities on ‘Sophisticated Ladies,’ the 25th-anniversary album of Charlie Haden Quartet West, is formidable. The 12-cut CD is the deepest immersion in the quartet’s moody retro film noir style since its 1999 album, ‘The Art of the Song,’ which featured the guest vocalists Shirley Horn and Bill Henderson.

“The happiest surprise is Ms. Fleming’s voluptuously besotted rendition of ‘A Love Like This,’ composed by Victor Young as a theme for the 1943 movie ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls,’ with lyrics by Ned Washington. Ms. Fleming's rich, gliding voice evokes a woman wallowing in heedless sensual afterglow, her half-choked singing flooded with emotion.”–Stephen Holden, New York Times
