Haydn: Orlando Paladino
For more than 25 years René Jacobs has dedicated his life to baroque operas and works with the best ensembles for early music. On the occasion of the Haydn Year the renowned Freiburger Barockorchester and outstanding baroque opera singers such as Marlis Petersen, Alexandrina Pendatchanska, Pietro Spagnoli and Tom Randle presented Haydn’s most successful opera at the Berliner Staatsoper.

Juan Diego Flórez, Joyce DiDonato, Pietro Spagnoli, conducted by Antonio Pappano
About the DVD:
This DVD sees Joyce DiDonato perform her role in a wheelchair
a story that has occupied international headlines. Joyce
brought literal meaning to the old theatrical motto Break a
leg. After she broke her fibula in an earlier show Joyce was
determined to finish her commitment. The good-spirited diva
was re-staged into the production to allow for the additional
challenges that come when a leading lady in a lively physical
role must wheel around the other performers.Joyce posted the following on her blog post-performance: Well,
without a doubt, last night was one of the most memorable, exciting
nights in my life. I suppose that makes two in a row for me. I arrived
at the theater around 4:30 and was introduced to my new co-star: a
beautiful, sleek Moonlite Breezy Wheelchair. The DVD bonus features include an interview with Joyce on her
stage accident and subsequent wheelchair performances.

“Filmed in high-definition audio and video, this production should become a DVD reference for anyone who wants to see it sung and acted to perfection. But, as winsome as DiDonato is, the wheelchair is a distraction. This is a must-see once, but perhaps not more often.”–John Terauds, Toronto Star

“According to Carol Charnow, general director of Opera Boston, ‘This [upcoming] production [of Offenbach's La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein] is the most elaborate we’ve ever done,’ fully staged with eight principal parts, four smaller roles and a chorus of 20, plus orchestra, new sets and costumes.”–enterprisenews.com
This July the Newport Music Festival in Rhode Island will include the American debut of Ukrainian bayanist (chromatic button accordion) and YouTube sensation Aleksandr Hrustevich.
In an interview with Emma Pomfret of the Times, tenor Marcelo Álvarez’s “greatest vitriol is reserved for opera bloggers, whose continual criticism and sniping gossip, he says, damages singers. ‘Perhaps you sing one bad performance and these websites attack and blow it out of proportion. They always write: bad, bad, bad!’ he rants, drowning out the translator in English. ‘Some artistic directors read these sites and a lot of contracts go.’ This hasn’t happened to him, and he cannot give me a direct example but, he says: ‘I know it has happened. This is the real cancer of our opera world.’”
