I didn’t go to New York for the Ian Bostridge recital. The trains aren’t running through Providence because there is water on the tracks near Providence. I didn’t feel like going to the bother of traveling into Boston to take a bus to New York, and then back again. The trains are easier for me because I can get them at the Route 128 stop in Westwood.

Liam Bonner

“As the Met continues its run of Thomas’s opera ‘Hamlet’, the Washington National Opera is preparing for its own production, in May, with announcement of a cast change. Carlos Alvarez, originally announced for the lead role, has withdrawn from the production; the role will be sung instead by Michael Chioldi and Liam Bonner (who is singing the small role of Horatio at the Met, and therefore has the signal advantage of familiarity with a relatively little-known score). Their dates have not yet been announced, leading one to wonder, perhaps frivolously, if the idea is to see which of them does better with the part in rehearsals.”–Anne Midgette, The Classical Beat

Rossini: Armida / Fleming, Kunde, Francis, Kaasch, Fowler, D’Arcangelo, Gatti

“Renée Fleming, who will reprise the title role in the Metropolitan Opera’s new April 2010 production . . . made this recording near the start of her international career. She sails through the role with virtuosity and luscious sound, and pays attention to the text, exhibiting none of the scooping and other mannerisms that have since become irritating.”–Robert Levine, Listen magazine of September/October 2009

Zankel Hall recital by Gerald Finley, baritone, & Julius Drake, piano

I attended a delightful recital last night by Gerald Finley, baritone, and Julius Drake, piano, at Zankel Hall in Carnegie Hall, New York. The sold-out audience was very appreciative. I also had the pleasure of meeting Petra and Janet from the websites GeraldFinley.info and JuliusDrake.info, both of whom are visiting New York. Some of the artists’ compact discs were sold in the lobby, and both artists stayed after the performance to autorgraph CDs at a table in the lobby.
